Although vinyl siding is a durable and low maintenance cladding material there are ways your vinyl siding might become damaged. One common cause of vinyl siding damage is from BBQ grills. If the grill is placed too close to the wall the excessive heat can melt or distort a portion of the vinyl siding. Vinyl siding can also be damaged by severe impacts or punctures. Various substances can also stain or discolor your vinyl siding.
Whatever the cause, if part of the vinyl siding is damaged there are ways to repair or replace the damaged section. Here are some tips to make sure the repaired or replaced section matches your existing vinyl siding:
Paint the siding to match – If the problem is discoloration, and not actual physical damage, one option is to paint the discolored section of the vinyl siding to match the surrounding areas. This tends to work best when the discolored portion is small or located in an unobtrusive spot. Refer to my previous bog post on tips for painting vinyl siding for best results. You can also paint replacement pieces to match if you can’t otherwise obtain an exact color match.
Install a patch of new siding – If the siding was installed within the last few years you may be able to obtain a replacement piece in the exact color and style. Contact your vinyl siding contractor and see if they can supply you with a short section.
Move a section of siding – If the damaged portion of the vinyl siding is in an especially noticeable spot one trick is to replace it with a piece of siding from a less visible spot on the house. This works well if you can’t find an exact match otherwise. You would then replace the “donor” piece with the less well matching new piece.
Remember that you will need to appropriate vinyl siding installation tools to remove and replace any portion of the siding.
